Northwest Buffalo Community Center was awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Education for $1.3 million dollars over
3 years. The funds are being used to implement additional Supplemental Education Services (SES/tutoring) into four 21st
Century Community Learning Centers (called Project BASIS). Project BASIS has been implemented at School #79 and School
#94, as well as through the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northtowns of WNY. The Supplemental Educational Services Grant
(Project BASIS), awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, is currently in its third year of implementation, and is working
hard to increase student participation again this year. Project BASIS has been implemented in two of our partner schools,
Grabiarz School of Excellence and West Hertel Academy. In addition, we have two off-site locations through our partnership
with the Boys and Girls Club of the Northtowns. Our SES partners in this project, Huntington Learning Center and Princeton
Review offer Supplemental Educational Services to eligible students on-site at each participating after-school program.

In addition to the student program, we have been able to present several workshops for parents and caregivers this fall.
Among them, a No Child Left Behind workshop where we were able to give away almost 100 backpacks to students. We will
be starting the workshops up again this spring with a follow up workshop on Bullying (with EPIC and the FBI’s Community
Outreach Specialist) in March as well as Literacy workshops (we will be hosting a storyteller) in April and June. If you would
like additional information about upcoming workshops or the Supplemental Educational Services Program, please contact
Sarah Peters at 876-8108 extension 43.
As partners in this project, Huntington Learning Center and Princeton Review offer SES services to eligible students on-site at each participating after-school program.
Student assessments precede academic intervention focusing on English Language Arts (both reading and writing) and mathematics.

"We are very excited to be given the opportunity to further assist the students that are already part of our very successful 21st Century Community Learning Center
programs", said Sean McCrossan, the Director of Northwest's 21st Century operation.  "Our goal has always been to provide the highest quality educational opportunity
for all of our students.  Under the direction of Larry Pernick, the Executive Director of the Northwest Buffalo Community Center, we continually strive to maintain that focus.”

Although we encountered some initial difficulty in getting applications approved this
year, we have gained momentum over the past 3 months. This is possible because of
the increased collaboration with administrators, teachers, and families. A critical
component to the success of this pilot program has been the collaboration among all
involved parties.

“Our goal continues to be to provide the best educational opportunities for the
children we serve”, said Sarah Peters, the Program Director of the Supplemental
Educational Services Program.

“Under the leadership of Larry Pernick, the Executive Director of the Northwest
Buffalo Community Center, we continue to do our best to uphold that goal.”
