Programs Update (Fall 2011)
21st Century Community Learning Center
We currently operate quality educational afterschool programming at eight city of Buffalo Public schools; Grabiarz School of Excellence, Riverside Institute of Technology, Roosevelt Early Childhood Center, and West Hertel Academy under our 21st Century Round 4 grant, and Frank A. Sedita, Futures Academy, Community School and the Academy School through our 21st Century Round 5 grant. The programs’ objectives remain focused on instituting top-flight academic instruction in order to increase each student’s learning skills, as well as to improve the test scores of the children who participate in our program. An added benefit, in addition to bettering academic performance, has students being introduced to a variety of unique non-academic activities that assist in skill development and physical fitness. We consistently register more than 1,000 inner-city students who elect to participate in Northwest Buffalo Community Center’s 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school programming. Daily attendance may see 600-800 students choosing to stay after the regular school day ends, and enjoying the benefits of 21st Century participation. Parents know their children are safe, are getting their homework done, are receiving quality academic guidance, are participating in fun, exciting well-supervised activities, are being fed, and are under the caring, watchful eye of teachers and staff that truly care about making a difference in their children’s lives.
Our 21st Century Program continues to attract more students each year, and we know it is truly making a difference with each child, both, while they are in school, and in their life outside of school.
21st Century/SAFE After School Programs
We’re thrilled with the progress of both of our 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, as well as our SAFE grant. Our Round 4 21st Century grant has allowed us to implement outstanding activities at Grabiarz School of Excellence (#79), Riverside Institute of Technology (#205), Roosevelt Early Childhood Center (#65), and West Hertel Academy (#94). We currently are beginning our 3rd year of operations at these schools, providing exciting and valuable academics as well as solid recreational programming. During the previous years of academic instruction, we’ve worked extremely hard at trying to improve the lives and the future of our students. That hard work has paid off immensely, as both West Hertel and Grabiarz have now been removed from the SIRR list while Riverside students have demonstrated marked improvement in their academic rankings (Roosevelt ECC remains a school in good standing).
Success has also been seen with our Round 5 21st Century partnering schools; Frank A. Sedita School (#30)-where we also utilize a SAFE grant to provide academic, recreational, and social skills improvement-Futures Academy (#37), Community School (#53), and the Academy School (#131). During the 2010-2011 school year, our SAFE grant at School 30 will provide funding for programs for grade 4, while our 21st Century grant targets children in grades 5-8. Our sound academic instruction methods have helped move two of our Round 5 21st Century schools (School #37 and School #53) closer to being removed completely from the SIRR list; a completed goal that we are truly looking forward to. Our objectives remain in providing quality academic teachings so that each child has a true opportunity to improve their overall learning, and to better their test scores. We also strive to offer a variety of recreational and sports programs that truly help in the building of mental and physical skills, as well as health, nutrition and physical fitness.

About Our After-school Programs...
The first session of the program provides students opportunities for homework assistance, tutoring, and instruction in Math, English Language Arts, Writing, and Reading. Following a break where students are given a nutritious snack, the students continue their participation in a wide variety of exciting, often challenging recreational activities.
